Masks are for Halloween, not onboarding

Making a genuine connection with others on either side of onboarding can only happen if you take off your mask.  We all wear different masks at different times. Sometimes they are extremely useful.

Not so if you are onboarding into a new position yourself or helping someone else onboard into a position reporting to you.  In these cases, it's important to establish real, authentic, high integrity personal relationships.  Leave the masks aside for Halloween and other situations.
