All onboarding is emotional. It’s all about moving people’s feelings.
The process has value
Just because all onboarding is emotional does not mean you can relax the process. The basic steps of getting a head start, managing the message, and inspiring and enabling others are critical to helping you move people’s feelings in the right direction whether you are the person joining the organization or the person bringing someone in.
The process is a means to an end
In the end, all onboarding is emotional. Keep this in mind as you are going through the process. It’s all about moving people’s feelings. So, at every step along the way, be mindful of whose feelings you’re trying to move, where you’re moving them to, and where you’re moving them from.
What you don’t do is often more important than what you do do
The emotions triggered by being ignored are often stronger than the emotions triggered by someone trying to do the right thing, but not succeeding. So, seek out all the stakeholders. Get others to help you identify the hard to find stakeholders. And help move their feelings to support you and what you’re trying to accomplish.
In the end, all onboarding is emotional because moving people’s feelings is the only way to move anything forward.
