Living in the moment is often a freeing concept. Evolving from the current state is a way to move forward. But, if you want to increase your chances of achieving your goals, it is important to think destination-back.
Begin with the end in mind is one of Steven Covey’s core ideas. It is applicable to succession planning:
- Start with the organization’s long-term purpose, objectives and goals
- Clarify the strategic priorities that will lead to their achievement
- Agree on the organizational strengths required to deliver those strategic priorities
- Assess the organization’s current strengths
- Identify individuals with the organization who can build those strengths over time
- Recruit, onboard, and develop external hires to fill the gaps that current employees cannot.
