Destination-back succession planning

Living in the moment is often a freeing concept.  Evolving from the current state is a way to move forward.  But, if you want to increase your chances of achieving your goals, it is important to think destination-back.

Begin with the end in mind is one of Steven Covey’s core ideas.  It is applicable to succession planning:

  • Start with the organization’s long-term purpose, objectives and goals
  • Clarify the strategic priorities that will lead to their achievement
  • Agree on the organizational strengths required to deliver those strategic priorities
  • Assess the organization’s current strengths
  • Identify individuals with the organization who can build those strengths over time
  • Recruit, onboard, and develop external hires to fill the gaps that current employees cannot.

There's more on this in The Total Onboarding Program (which starts to ship this week!)
