Transformational Leadership and Onboarding

Webster defines transform as to change, and lead as to guide.  Thus transformational leadership is about guiding change – as is onboarding.

Two-way transformation

Transformational leadership is two-way.  Leaders transform followers and followers transform leaders at the same time.

This is the case in onboarding.  New team members transform teams at the same time that they are adapting to them.

Be – Do – Say

Sometimes transformations are superficial.  People adopt the new style and words, but nothing else.

Sometimes transformations are behavioral.  People match their actions to their new words.

The highest impact and most enduring transformations happen at the level of core beliefs and values.  If beliefs and values change, words and actions will follow.

Lead and Follow

At this time of year in particular, we’re reminded that leaders come from all sorts of places – literally and figuratively.  Whether you’re onboarding into a new role, bringing someone onto your team, or just re-thinking your approach for the new year, embrace both sides of the transformation so you can lead and follow at the same time.  Your contributions will be more meaningful, more rewarding, and more enduring.
