Onboarding issue: Solving the Wrong Problem

One organization hired a new Controller for one of its divisions.  A week after she started, the company decided to merge her division with another and eliminated her job.

The issue

The issue is time, effort and money wasted recruiting someone into a role that doesn’t solve the real problem the organizaiton is facing – not to mention the disruption and pain the recruit goes through.

The suggestion

Our suggesed approach is to reconfirm the organization’s purpose, priorities, and desired results, and make sure the hiring manager’s efforts are aligned with the organization’s direction.

This is one of the issues dealt with in our new book: Onboarding – How to Get Your New Employees Up to Speed in Half the Time (Bradt and Vonnegut, Wiley 2009)
